Vice-rector for Science, Research and International Projects
Martin Rebroš has held the position of Associate Professor at the Institute of Biotechnology of the Faculty of Chemical and Food Technology of the Slovak University of Technology since 2015. He gradually built a strong young team focused on the intensification of fermentation processes, established recombinant DNA techniques for the preparation of new generation biocatalysts, their isolation, purification and application.
He began his scientific career at the Faculty of Chemical Technology of the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, where in 2006 he defended his dissertation in the field of ethanol preparation using immobilized systems. He subsequently completed a one-year postdoc at the University of Manchester (UK), where he worked on a project focused on waste glycerol and the production of added value substances. He gradually focused on microbial overproduction of metabolites, intensification of biocatalytic processes and combinations of chemical and biotechnological processes for the preparation of higher added value compounds. He qualified as an associate professor in this field in 2014.
He has published 59 papers in international scientific journals indexed in Scopus and WOS (his H index is 24), which have been cited more than 1,450 times (Scopus), has 127 contributions at domestic and foreign conferences, is the author of one textbook and co-author of three professional books.
He is the guarantor of the bachelor's study program Biotechnology and the chairman of the board of this study program. As a supervisor, he has so far supervised 51 bachelor's and 41 diploma theses, trained 8 doctoral students (currently supervises four PhD students). He created and is the guarantor of the profile subject Biocatalysis, and is also the guarantor of another 12 subjects provided within the framework of bachelor's, engineering and PhD studies.
In the years 2007-2025, he was the principle investigator (PI) of two 7FP projects, currently he is the PI of the HE project (WIDEnzymes) and from November 2025 of the new HE project (NextMarine). He was a member of the Management Committee of four COST Action projects, the PI of one APVV project and a co-investigator of three VEGA projects, 11 APVV projects and 7 projects financed from the Structural Funds.
At the Institute of Biotechnology of the Faculty of Chemical and Food Technology of the Slovak University of Technology, he leads the Laboratories of Applied Biocatalysis, which are among the leading, dynamically developing workplaces within the faculty. The research team has long-term cooperation with research organizations in Slovakia and abroad. The laboratories carry out basic and applied research focused on the application of recombinant DNA techniques and their use in biosynthesis processes in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic expression systems.
