Professor Maximilián Strémy received a decree appointing him as Rector of the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava from the hands of Peter Pellegrini, the President of the Slovak Republic. The ceremony took place on 1 September 2025 at the Presidential Palace. Professor Strémy will assume the highest position at STU on 7 September, after the term of office of Rector Oliver Moravčík expires.

In his address, President Pellegrini recalled his several personal visits to STU and highlighted the fact that University has educated 180 thousand graduates in its 88-year history. “Technical education and the education of technical intelligence are the pillars of the future of our economy and competitiveness,” said the President.
President Pellegrini emphasized that the post of Rector involves significant responsibility for the successful development of the University and also for the overall level of education in Slovakia. In this regard, he noted that society today suffers from noticeable polarization and distrust of scientific authorities and knowledge.
“These negative tendencies sharply contrast with global development, which emphasises the use of intellect, education, creativity and acquired knowledge or developed skills,” said the head of state, adding that human potential is the basis of economic success and the ability to withstand international competition. According to the President, Slovakia has a chance of a lifetime to catch this trend and return from the dangerous path of denying facts, science and knowledge towards utilisation of innovations and building a knowledge-based economy.
“It is our common wish to free ourselves from the burden of these negative phenomena, so this country can progress and have a chance to take up demanding global challenges. Therefore, best of luck with your future endeavours, since the achievements of your students and your University will also bring success to all of Slovakia,” added President Pellegrini.

"In accordance with the program I submitted when running for the post of the STU Rector, I will emphasize quality in education and research, strategic partnerships with industry, the private sector and regions, so that we all together manage to bring innovations moving Slovakia forward," continued Maximilián Strémy, the newly appointed STU Rector, adding that he would strive to build a motivating and innovative academic environment at the University that supports talents. President Pellegrini was invited to visit STU and discuss the topic of supporting innovation and STEM fields.
