Competencies

The graduate of the Study Field "Civil Engineering" Study Program "Theory and Construction of Buildings" is characterized by • independent, critical and analytical thinking, ability to work independently and effectively in a scientific manner; • creativity in determining the focus of research, selecting appropriate research methods, coordinating the work of the research team in solving difficult problems of theory and construction of civil engineering structures; • ability to bring own theoretically and experimentally justified original solutions to the problems of construction of civil engineering structures in form of tangible or intangible outputs; • ability to apply the results of his/her creative scientific work in the design, assessment, diagnostics and reconstruction of civil engineering structures; • ability to cooperate with domestic and foreign scientists, to present the results of his/her scientific work at international level in a world language, to cooperate with other countries, to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams; • readiness to hold expert functions in central national as well as European technical commissions.

Profile courses

Employability of graduates

The graduate of PhD studies is a highly qualified specialist in design and theoretical-experimental assessment of building structures determining functional properties of the internal environment of buildings. Graduates are mainly employed at Slovak technical universities as scientific and pedagogical staff, in various research and development organizations and a number of them work in practice as independent experts and consultants. The concept of the study program allows graduates to find employment in all countries of the European Union and basically in any country in the world. Several graduates work at universities and research institutes in Belgium, Ukraine, Canada, Scotland and other countries. They are mainly focused on technical aspects of architecture, i.e. building acoustics, daylighting of buildings, facade technology, thermal technology, energy efficacy of buildings, diagnostics and reconstruction of building structures, complex computer simulations of comfort and safety parameters of indoor environment of buildings. Many graduates work as independent specialists in the above mentioned fields or are employed in consulting companies and design studios. They also work in top management positions.

Examples of professions the graduate is prepared for

The graduate of the Study Field "Civil Engineering" Study Program "Theory and Construction of Buildings" can be employed as: • leader of a creative research team in Slovakia and abroad; • independent scientific and pedagogical researcher at universities and various research and development institutes; • expert and consultant in building physics, depending on his/her specialization (building and spatial acoustics, building thermal technology, daylighting and building insolation, aerodynamics and hydrodynamics of buildings, building pathology), or expert in assessment of energy performance of buildings, fire safety of buildings, building structures of civil engineering constructions as an independent specialist or in consulting companies, in design and investment organizations, etc; • highly qualified professional employee in state authorities and local government authorities.
