Spatial, material, and technical provision of a study programme

Information provisions and literature

As regards information technology, multilicences of software products of companies like Microsoft, AutoDesk, Intergraph, PTC, ANSYS, Tekla Structure and others are purchased for the needs of the faculty. Updating of licences (subscriptions) of software products is carried out continuously. In accordance with the gradual development of the STU information system, the faculty computer network is being improved as well as the faculty's connection to the SANET node. Lenovo workstations with appropriate software equipment have been purchased to provide for the needs of the departments regarding numerically demanding calculations. To ensure the smooth operation of faculty systems and increase security, the distribution data centre of the Faculty of Civil Engineering has been modernized in the past two years. New high-performance servers from IBM and virtualization software from VMware were purchased. The needs of the faculty are secured by long-term agreements between STU and Microsoft (Microsoft Select, Campus Agreement). Licenses and products are intended only for teaching and university administration, they are not intended for conducting business activities. Under the agreement, STU can use the following products free of charge: · upgrade of the operating system of personal computers (with the option of downgrade), · MS Office in all versions and languages, · terminal (client) server licenses, · desktop Optimization Pack (remote PC management software). The security of the computer stations is ensured by a central server ESET security management center with the latest ESET endpoint antivirus software for 32 and 64-bit operating systems which is updated daily and available freely and free of charge at all workplaces and departments at the Faculty of Civil Engineering. Faculty computer network Currently, the Faculty of Civil Engineering is connected to the SANET network by a fibre optic cable which a transmission speed of 10 Gbit/s. Powerful routers Cisco Catalyst 3850 XS 10G SFP+ and Cisco Catalyst 3560E Series are central elements of the network. They ensure the possibility to monitor and manage the network. Software upgrades and configuration of the topologically most important active elements of the faculty computer network are continuously being implemented, centrally managed and monitored and efficiently administered. In the LAN infrastructure of the faculty, the staff of the Centre of Information Technology of the Faculty of Civil Engineering (IT centre) is continuously improving/upgrading the structured cabling based on fibre optics/UTP Cat5e/Cat 6. Currently, there are approximately 1000 active connection points (ports) installed at the faculty. At the level of individual workplaces/departments, the connection points are connected to the computer network by UTP Cat.5e/Cat6 cabling. Older active network elements are currently being replaced by elements with a high level of management and monitoring (Aruba, Cisco). All computers in computer rooms are connected to the Faculty of Civil Engineering computer network via UTP Cat5e/Cat 6 cabling with a transmission speed of 1Gb/s. Outside of classes, the classrooms of the IT centre are accessible to faculty students for individual work on computers or for the use of network services including unlimited access to the internet. A wireless Wi-Fi network is available in all classrooms at the faculty where most of the teaching takes place, as well as in other areas of the faculty (atrium, library and information centre, auditorium). The Faculty of Civil Engineering has a fully operational international project Eduroam which has enabled members of the academic community to connect to the computer network at any academic institution based on the username and password valid at their home institution. The networks included in the Eduroam project function as wireless networks (Wi-Fi) according to 802.11ac (1 Gbit/s) and 802.11b/g/n (54Mbit/s) standards. Wireless networks are continuously updated, currently 32 Cisco access-points are installed. IT centre staff ensures the Wi-Fi signal coverage according to current needs. They also provide consultancy to students in setting up laptops, tablets and smartphones. Faculty computer classrooms For teaching and individual work of students, the faculty currently uses mostly computer classrooms. There are 5 classrooms available to students in the IT centre which are specialised in CAD-systems. The classrooms are open 12 hours a day during the semester for teaching or individual work of students. One of the computer classrooms - the Computer seminar room is adapted for teaching in English language. The computers in the classrooms are Intel, AMD8, i5, min. 2.2 GHz, contain 8 GB of operating memory, have hard drives of more than 120 GB and LCD monitors of 19-22 inches. The classrooms are used for teaching of specialized programs, graphic programs AutoCAD, MicroStation, Allplan, Dlubal, MathCAD, Nemetschek, ArcGIS as well as basic teaching of Windows operating system and Office programs. The number of visitors of the IT centre classrooms is currently approximately 1,500 students per week, i.e., a total of more than 20,000 students per semester and 40,000 students per year. The staff of the IT centre provides daily professional consultancy services to students. Other services Plotting and copying centre - PAKS provides colour and B/W printing services up to A0 format, colour and B/W plotting up to A0 format, B/W copying up to A0 format, B/W scanning up to A0 format, fast document scanner in colour and B/W - A4 format. The centre is available to students as well as to faculty departments. It is in double shift operation during the semester if necessary due to high demand from students. In 2019, PAKS started to offer a 24-hour printing self-service for STU students and staff which can be used directly from their mobile device or kiosk which is located next to a freely accessible printer. We plan to build two more printing self-service locations at the faculty in future. The departments involved in the educational process also have specialized computer rooms.
