Graduate Profile

Knowledge

The graduate has a specialized systematic body of knowledge corresponding to the highest international standards for creative solution of difficult tasks of research and development in selected areas of water management engineering including knowledge and understanding of relationships to other branches of the discipline and to related disciplines. In the specialized area of water management engineering, he/she has a deep knowledge of water science theories, sophisticated experimental laboratory methods, field research methods, geo- and hydroinformatics procedures. The graduate can solve difficult and typical problems of design, management and operation of selected systems and objects of water management engineering with specialisation in rising, hydropower and control objects on watercourses and reservoirs, land ameliorative and water supply systems, water management, wastewater management and environmental engineering. In his/her area of expertise, he/she masters scientific methods of research and development necessary for investigating and solving problems of interactions between society and components of the water environment in nature and technical systems including the design of structural and nature-friendly measures against natural threats. In his/her chosen area of expertise, he/she has the broad interdisciplinary knowledge necessary for integrated water management and water planning, for management of natural and urbanised watersheds and the protection and revitalisation of aquatic and environmental environments.

Skillset

The graduate can independently develop his/her chosen field of water management engineering at a top international level. He/she can identify global scientific and innovative developments in the chosen and in related fields, create and formulate new hypotheses, judgments and strategies for its further development applying: - methods of collecting, processing and evaluating qualified expert documents and data from field and laboratory measurements, - scientific methods of observation including scientific description, experiment and evaluation, - methods of physical and mathematical modelling including generalisation and application of results, as well as using: - acquired abilities to provide own solutions to technical, water and environmental problems in order to ensure the required quality of the environment and protection of society, - acquired creative correlative thinking and understanding of events in their interdependence and continuity, - a problem-oriented rather than sector-oriented approach in formulation of problems and methods of solving in the chosen field of water management engineering.

Competencies

The graduate can: - consider priorities for the future development of society and its relationship with the environment, - follow adopted ethical standards of scientific work and apply the principles of scientific integrity, - think critically, independently and analytically, - analyse and solve problems with appropriate environmental, scientific, mathematical, technical and digital literacy skills, - plan his/her personal development, - organize and plan work, make decisions, motivate and lead people, - work independently, as well as in a team, - be responsible for the results of his/her work and the results of the team, - communicate with people in a foreign language, - work in international research team, - present the results of scientific work in writing in a world language, - present the results of scientific work in a world language, - prepare grant applications in a world language.

Employability of graduates

The graduate typically finds employment as a creative employee in research, development, concepts and leadership in entities focused on basic and applied water management research, in secondary and higher education, in top design offices, in business and corporate sector focused on development and improvement of water resources usage, water management, water and environmental protection, design, implementation and management of complex water management and environmental constructions, in state administration in the field of water management and environment (central authorities, environmental authorities, river basin companies, water supply companies, sanitary service, geological service, hydrometeorological service, etc.), in the insurance industry for risk assessment, and in the non-governmental sector for environmental and water protection.

Examples of professions the graduate is prepared for

The third-degree university education provides the graduate with the possibility to find employment in the national and European labour market. The graduate’s qualification is linked to the requirements of the national qualification system within the National Qualifications Framework of the Slovak Republic (abbreviation in Slovak: SKKR) (selected professions according to the profession register for Agriculture, Horticulture, Fishery and Veterinary, Energy, Gas and Electricity, Construction, Waste Management and Environment, Science and Research, Education, Training and Sport, Water Management and Water Supply) and with the European Qualifications Framework (EQF) (in selected professions in the categories Production Managers, Managers in specialized services, Science and Technology Specialists, Teachers and Professional Teaching Staff, Science and Technology Technicians and Professionals, Water Construction and Water Management Specialists).
