Spatial, material, and technical provision of a study programme

The Faculty of Architecture and Design of the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava has its own building (at Námestie slobody 19) in Bratislava, which houses the main part of its spatial, material and technical support for the study field of Architecture and Urbanism. The additional facility for the provision of the study programme is its own detached workplace FAD - Educational and Scientific Research Centre in Banská Štiavnica. General lecture and seminar rooms The main facilities in the main building are the lecture rooms (an auditorium with a capacity of 220 people, two lecture halls with a capacity of 80 people, as well as other smaller lecture rooms) equipped with digital audiovisual technology and aids for interactive lectures, exercises and discussions. There are a number of distributed flexible seminar rooms of different sizes in the FAD building, allowing optimal spatial adaptation to the content, form and teaching method, number of students, or other individual requirements of the teaching of a particular subject. On each floor of the faculty there is a multifunctional space called the respiratory area, usable as a lecture, workshop, working or relaxation space depending on the current needs. Vertical studios Within the study field of Architecture and Urbanism, stable spaces of vertical studios are established to ensure the teaching of studio design courses. The spaces are used to simulate the process of architectural design in practice, with each student having their own workspace. The studio is permanently available to students, it is equipped with furniture with the possibility of its flexible arrangement for group or individual work on projects, creative brainstorming, discussion, specialized lectures, defenses and project presentations. Specialized classrooms and workshops (art disciplines) Within the field of study, emphasis is also placed on subjects of an artistic nature, serving to develop students' artistic skills, spatial imagination and ability to express themselves visually. For these purposes, the faculty has two separate drawing rooms with specialized space and furniture equipment (adjustable lighting, drawing goats and easels, boards, props, exhibition system) for drawing and painting still lifes, figures, etc. using various artistic techniques. The faculty also has a large and a small model and plaster room, which are specially equipped for clay modelling, production of plaster casts or other smaller models, printing from depth and height and have the necessary equipment (modelling stands, adjustable lighting, clay trays, printing press, trays and spouts...). Computer support classroom To teach the basics of computer support for architectural design as well as specialized seminars for learning to work with specific CAD software, the faculty has a computer lab, and it is also adapted for group learning, equipped with desktop computers and CAD software, all other rooms are adapted to work on laptops, allowing them to connect to the network and develop computer skills in an individualized software environment and interface in which they are accustomed to work. In addition to the aforementioned computer rooms with the necessary audiovisual equipment, the Faculty has rooms within the University Science Park that can be used additionally for group computer support classes. Language classrooms and laboratories Three language rooms/classrooms with the necessary audio-visual equipment are allocated at the faculty for teaching foreign languages. Workshop rooms The faculty has its own workshop which is available for making architectural models in wood, paper, polystyrene etc. It is equipped with machinery for cutting and machining wood and its surface finishing (a worker is available by arrangement to operate the more demanding machines and to assist students with the preparation and processing of the material). In addition, in cooperation with the University Science Park, students have access to equipment for the creation of architectural models (3D printers, CNC milling machine, laser cutters). Classrooms for students with specific needs In terms of accessibility and accessibility of studies for students with specific needs, the faculty has built two specialized barrier-free classrooms, which are part of the STU Support Centre and serve as special classrooms and a training centre with nationwide coverage. They are equipped with the necessary assistive technologies (e.g. sound amplification system - built-in induction loop, projection technology). The faculty building is adapted in terms of barrier-free access to all publicly accessible areas and is equipped with lifts meeting the relevant requirements, as well as barrier-free toilet facilities. Library and study room The academic library of the Faculty of Architecture and Design of STU specializes in professional journal and book literature in accordance with the study programmes of the faculty (architecture, urban planning, design and related fields of study). It is a scientific-information, bibliographic, coordination and advisory unit of the faculty, which provides library and information services for the teaching and research process of the faculty. The FAD Library centrally bibliographically records and preserves the publication and artistic activities of the creative staff and internal doctoral students of the Faculty. The library also includes a study room, which provides students and the public with a space for studying and working on computers. (Library with study room - 65 workplaces for studying library documents, working with laptops, etc., 10 library PCs with internet connection via WiFi and fixed network, self-service copying (chargeable) - A3 and A4 formats, self-service scanning workstation (free of charge) - A3 and A4 formats, separate study room - 40 workstations for studying own materials, preparing assignments and projects, working with laptops, internet connection via WiFi and fixed network, technical equipment for presentations, trainings, lectures or panel discussions). Multifunctional catering area with dining The dining space allows students to consume their own meals, with occasional reheating, but also occasional work at individual tables, discussions, workshops, etc. Student lounge The Student Lounge is a space managed by the FAD STU student platform. It is furnished with furniture, tables, chairs, sofas, and game elements. Students use the space as a social space, to meet and integrate new students, or for discussions with guests. CEDA spaces CEDA (Centre of Design for All) focuses on research and professional support for the design and implementation of barrier-free environments in accordance with the principles of inclusion and non-discrimination. CEDA's aim is to explore and apply the principles of designing environments using the "Universal Design" method - "Design for All". An environment designed in this way enables equal enjoyment by all people, regardless of their physical, sensory and mental abilities and capacities. BCD Lab The BCD Lab is the Faculty of Architecture's research, education and development facility for Body Conscious Design (BCD Lab).It conducts research and training in the field of design. BCD Lab is an association of internal lecturers, researchers and external experts in the field of interior design, ergonomics, neuroergonomics, social sciences, medicine and neurosciences, project managers and PhD students of the Faculty of Architecture STU in Bratislava.

Information provisions and literature

Access to the study literature is provided: ● in remote form - resources available on PCs from the FAD premises as well as from home (based on the IP addresses), ● in on-site form - the FAD Library makes its holdings available for on-site and off-site study, and allows licensed access to online periodicals and Slovak technical standards on the library PCs, ● the library annually updates the lists of study literature of the FAD study programmes according to years based on the information sheets and indicates their availability in the library fund, in electronic or physical form, and publishes them on its website. FAD STU Library: ● specializes in professional book and magazine literature in accordance with the study programmes of the faculty and related fields of teaching, which are approved by the course supervisors and study programmes, ● regular addition to the library fund is carried out on the basis of provided funds from the faculty subsidies, grants, sponsorships, and exchanges of publications, ● makes available on library PCs access to licensed databases under national and STU licenses (including the DETAIL inspiration database, making projects published in DETAIL available), to the STN-online service with full texts of standards as well as to electronic versions of profile journals, which are also available in print in the library, and a collection of 88 titles of full-text e-books from the DeGruyter database, purchased from the FPU grant provided in 2017, ● provides presentations of library information services for first-year students, presentations of available databases for senior students and individual demonstrations of searching for documents from print and electronic sources available in the library, ● organizes presentations of the library's activities to foreign students of the faculty, ERASMUS+ students and other English-speaking visitors were provided through promotional materials and individual consultations in English, ● realizes a seminar Relevant information sources for doctoral students, which was in 2020 implemented online through MS Teams within a course of the doctoral studies.

Conditions of distance learning and combined form of studies

The transition from the full-time method to the distance method and the STU conditions is established by the STU Study Regulations. The forms and extent of distance learning in individual subjects are determined by the Dean (after individual assessment and justification). Distance learning is implemented through MS Teams, Google Meet.

Counselling and support services

Study department

Is a place of first contact for an applicant and student. Offers counselling and support services for the admission process, and in all areas related to studies - specifically enrollment, creation of a study plan, fulfillment of study obligations, recognition of subjects, change of study programme, interruption of studies, tuition fees, social care, scholarships and accommodation. Additionally, it also offers help in domestic internships and mobilities.

Department of Education and Students Care

Methodically guides and coordinates counselling services for applicants and students in the areas of education and social care at STU. Directs appeal proceedings to decisions issued by faculty authorities. Offers services of issuing and verifying documents of study completion, issuing of duplicates of documents of study, recognition of documents for applicants, decisions to award scholarships, remit tuition and support for student organizations at STU.

Counselling center at STU

In cooperation with faculty coordinators, offers counselling services in the area of effective studying, for students with specific needs, in career development, social counselling and counselling in the area of mental health and wellbeing.

InQb University technology incubator

Aids students and graduates of STU to develop their entrepreneurship ideas in incubator programmes START and UP.

Department of International Relations

In cooperation with faculty coordinators, coordinates and organizes international mobilities and internships of STU students, as well as ensures related studies. 

Accommodations and Canteens

STU provides accommodation for students in seven student dormitories - SD Mladá garda, SD Jura Hronca, SD Nikosa Belojanisa, SD Akademik, SD Dobrovičova, SD Mladosť, SD Miloša Uhra in Trnava.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner is offered in canteens of student dormitories of STU. During the day, dining halls and cafeterias are available at places of learning or nearby faculties. A student ID is valid in all STU dining facilities.  STU Canteen Reservation System.
