Graduate Profile

Knowledge

The graduate of the Study Field Geodesy and Cartography Study Program Geodesy and Cartography has a systematic and comprehensive body of the state-of-the-art theoretical knowledge of science and research, and depending on the selected topic, also practical skills in the scientific discipline of geodesy and cartography. He/she has knowledge about the interaction of geodesy and cartography with other related scientific disciplines, e.g. mathematics, geography, physics, geophysics, astronomy and civil engineering. The graduate has a deep understanding of theory, sophisticated methods and procedures at a level corresponding to international standards and criteria. He/she can effectively formulate the methodological apparatus necessary for solving science and research tasks in geodesy and cartography and in related scientific disciplines. The graduate masters at least one foreign language at a level necessary for the studying of scientific literature, for the presentation of his/her results and skills and for active participation in international projects.

Skillset

The graduate of the Study Field Geodesy and Cartography Study Program Geodesy and Cartography masters the scientific methods for solving research and development tasks in geodesy and cartography with focus on the most technologically and methodologically difficult problems. He/she can follow the latest trends in the scientific discipline, develop them creatively, bring his/her own solutions and formulate strategies for its further development. The graduate can scientifically formulate a problem of a research or technological nature, solve it independently, lead a research team and present the results of the scientific work that contribute to the development of the discipline at national and international level. He/she masters the principles of formulating scientific problems and of designing his/her own solutions of these problems. He/she masters the methods of research, including physical and mathematical modelling, carrying out experiments and their assessment, the analysis, interpretation and visualization of results, as well as shaping of achieved solutions into a form that will immediately contribute to practice.

Competencies

The graduate of the Study Field Geodesy and Cartography Study Program Geodesy and Cartography is able to work effectively individually, as a team member or a team leader, to initiate the solution of complex problems, tasks and projects and to cooperate with other teams at national or international level. He/she is characterized by critical, independent and analytical thinking and by the ability to adapt to changing conditions, to creatively approach problem solving and unforeseen situations. The graduate can present the results of his/her research activities to a professional national and international community. He/she can analyze, assess and creatively modify his/her own research activities in a narrower but also wider context, estimate its impact on the processes in the scientific discipline of geodesy and cartography and reflect on the needs of society. In performing his/her activities and formulating research goals, he/she is able to follow up on the state-of-the-art developments in his/her discipline, to observe appropriate practices in accordance with the professional, legal and ethical framework of the discipline. The graduate can identify the needs for his/her own continuing professional development and the needs of his/her team members.

Profile courses

Employability of graduates

Graduates of the Study Field Geodesy and Cartography Study Program Geodesy and Cartography can be employed in the academic sector at universities with a study program geodesy and cartography, study field geodesy and cartography and as teachers of the course Geodesy, Geoinformatics in Slovakia and abroad. In Slovakia, they can find employment in state or public sector in organizations managed directly and methodically by The Geodesy, Cartography and Cadaster Authority of the Slovak Republic (Abbreviation in Slovak: ÚGKK SR), in the private sector as employees or after practicing for 3 years they can apply for the trade license. When working in the private sector, the graduate is entitled, after fulfilling further requirements, to apply for the status of authorized geodesist and expert in geodesy and cartography.

Examples of professions the graduate is prepared for

The graduate of the Study Field Geodesy and Cartography Study Program Geodesy and Cartography can, as a conceptual employee or manager, solve a wide range of research tasks and projects in the department of geodesy, cartography and cadaster. He/she can formulate development plans and define trends and perspectives in geodesy and cartography. He/she can identify, implement and apply modern methods and technologies in the application practice of geodesy and cartography. The graduate will find employment at home and abroad in scientific and educational institutions, in management positions in state administration bodies as well as in the business sector, especially in branches with a high degree of innovation.
