Graduate Profile

Knowledge

The graduate of the second degree university education in the study program Civil Engineering has deep and cross-cutting knowledge of problem solving across the full spectrum of civil engineering professions with a focus on the design, construction and technology of civil engineering and water management structures. The graduate understands the theories, methods and procedures of designing load-bearing structures of buildings and civil engineering structures covering the entire design process from designing the concept of the load-bearing system through designing dimensions of load-bearing elements, calculation of loads for standard structural materials such as reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, structural steel, steel-concrete, masonry, timber. He/she has adequate knowledge of geodesy, engineering and geological and geotechnical investigation, properties of soils and rocks, the interaction of the rock environment with the subsoil which he/she can apply to the procedures of the foundation of building structures and in the design and realization of geotechnical structures. The graduate also has knowledge of the use of water resources and their sustainable development in the landscape and urban space and can use this knowledge in the design, realization and operation of water structures for the protection of society from the destructive and harmful effects of water; water protection, the use of hydropower, water transport, water supply to society, economy and agriculture and wastewater treatment. He/she has knowledge of traffic engineering theory, traffic planning and deep, cross-cutting knowledge required to design linear structures such as highways, roads, urban roads in terms of their routing, construction and assessment of traffic impacts on the environment. The acquired knowledge can be applied not only in the realization of building structures but advanced methods of designing building structures can be further analyzed to optimize and select reliable methods of designing building structures.

Skillset

The graduate of the second degree university education in the study program Civil Engineering can creatively solve theoretical and practical tasks in connection with the profession of a civil engineer and its role in society, especially in the preparation, design and realization of civil engineering and water management structures considering economic and legislative requirements. He/she can actively acquire new information about the methods of designing building structures and fulfil the role of coordinator of interdisciplinary tasks in the process of designing, preparation and realization of buildings and civil engineering structures, navigate in the methods of research in the discipline and apply new knowledge in both design and realization practice. Based on the application of CAD systems and knowledge from studio work (Project I, Project II), he/she can comprehensively explain and solve assigned problems, synthesizing knowledge from various professional courses. The graduate can creatively prepare project documentation for various types of structures and optimize alternative design solutions for civil engineering and water structures using specialized computer programs.

Competencies

The graduate of the second degree university education in the study program Civil Engineering is characterized by a high level of creativity and independence as well as the ability to manage project teams of specialists in the field of design and realization of building structures with appropriate responsibility. He/she can independently design load-bearing structures of buildings and civil engineering structures including water structures, bridges, highways, roads, underground urban roads in terms of their routing, design and assessment of transport impacts on the environment. He/she can communicate with other professionals about final designs and formulate information about the final design solution in order to optimize solutions, particularly in terms of environmental and energy aspects.

Profile courses

Employability of graduates

Graduates of the Civil Engineering study program may continue their PhD studies in follow-up or related study programs. The versatility of this engineering study program allows the graduate to be employed in the construction industry in all European Union countries, wherever a second degree university education is required. The graduate of this study program has the advantage of a broad-spectrum knowledge in the design and realization of geotechnical, steel, concrete, transport as well as water structures. Graduates of the study program find employment in the labour market in all relevant sectors of the economy - in the private, public and state sector. They can creatively use their English language skills for international cooperation in the construction industry, especially in the positions of civil engineers, designers of linear structures, coordinators of international projects and researchers.
