Description:

Optoelectronics Laboratory is an integral part of the "Department of High-frequency Techniques and Optoelectronics" (OVTO) whose activities at present are focused mainly on the sensoric applications of optical waveguides and especially the optical fiber waveguides.

Except the scientific and reserch activities OVTO provides also the doctoral (PhD) study programme "Theoretical Electrical Engineering"(TE). Except  the program supervision OVTO provides two obligatory optional course units "Electrodynamics of Dielectric Waveguides" and "Special Measurement Methods in Fiber Otics". Along several last years two PhD theses were successfuly completed  in this study program. The topic of the particular PhD theses was oriented on the design and realization of optical fiber sensors with distributed parameters.

The main fields of the OVTO scientific and research activities are:

1. The theoretical analysis and modeling of external physical magnitudes ( temperature, mechanical stress, electric and magnetic fields,...) interaction with optical fiber (OF) structure and the application of the acquired results in the design and realization of optical fiber sensors with distributed parameters for the purpose of maping the space distribution of these magnitudes along the optical fiber. In modeling process except standard single mode optical fibers also special optical fibers like "Polarization Maintaining Optical Fibers" or "Photonic Crystal Optical Fibers" and also optical fibers with Bragg gratings are utilized.

2. The development and realization of optical fiber sensor systems with spread parameters for picking-up the above mentioned physical quantities. The sensor systems are based on the application of OTDR (Optical Time-Domain Reflectometry) and its variations like Photon-Counting OTDR (PC-OTDR), Polarization OTDR (PO-OTDR) and on their combination.

3. The most significant result in the field of the scientific and research activities is the design and realization of the prototype of the optical fiber reflectometer based on the combination of PC-OTDR and PO OTDR. Its main advantage is rather high dynamical range and simultaneously also high space resolution. In this way the main limiting factors of traditional OTDR were handily avoided.

Among others the LOE is equiped with following high quality instruments – 1. Optical Spectrum Analyser - ANRITSU-MS9740A (600 -1750 nm), 2. Osciloscope Tektronix DPO 5204 (2,3 GHz), 3. Lock-IN nanovoltmeter SR-830, 4. Optical Fiber Reflectometer JDSU MTS 6000 L, 5. IN LINE Polarimeter POD-101 D, 6. Optical Spectrum Analyser - Ocean Optics. 

 

Projects:

During the last years several scientific-research projects were solved in OVTO. The following are the last:

1. Project VEGA 1/3097/06 (2006-2009) – Optical Polarization Reflectometry and Optical Fiber Sensors

2. Project VEGA 1/0617/09 (2009-2011)– Optical Fiber Sensors and their Applications

3. EU Project solved in cooperation with GTA, s.r.o. Bratislava (2010/2013)

Along the years 2011- 2013 OVTO as one of the project partners, representing SUT took part in solution of the project „Applied Research and Developemnt of the Innovative Technology for the Ultradeep Geothermal Drills", (projekt Nb. 26240220042)" financed by EU.  The goal of the OVTO activities here was the cooperation in the development of the optical fiber sensors with spread parameters for the measurement of electric and magnetic fields in very hard conditions of ultradeep geothermal drills.
