Brief Description of the Institution

 

Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava is a modern educational and scientific institution. Since its foundation in the year 1937 more than 125.000 students have graduated there. In average, 19.000 students study at the STU every year.

At present, STU consists of seven faculties that provide research in a number of research departments and several centres of excellence following a long-term strategy when the priority areas are biotechnology and biocompatibility; sustainable resources and development: energy and raw materials; sustainable resources and development: environment, landscape and urbanism; nanotechnology, nanosciences and multifunctional intelligent materials; information society technologies; life, health and environment; safety, reliability and quality.

All the STU faculties provide study in accredited study programmes within the complex system of bachelor, master and PhD study. Faculties realise credit system compatible with the European credit transfer system enabling mutual mobility of students within European Union member countries and a larger European space. In the area of scientific and research activities the STU successfully joins European Union programmes.

The Department of Mathematics and Descriptive Geometry covers all areas of education in mathematics and descriptive geo­metry. It co-operates with the other Depart­ments in their research and consulting pro­jects. Its teaching is supported by a computer laboratory. The Department's research focu­ses on the theory and applications of fuzzy sets, numerical analysis of nonlinear partial differential equations with applications to flow-in porous media, free boundary prob­lems and image processing, topological graph theory, computer graphics, and non-standard measurement and integral theory.

 

Offered areas of research

 

“Image In Life“ is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Initial Training Network project, funded by the European Commission Horizon2020 programme, that addresses the challenge of understanding how cells behave to build organisms as complex as vertebrates and studying their development and diseases by analysis of 3D+time microscopic images. The project will run for 4 years starting on January 1, 2017, see also http://www.imageinlife.eu/.

“Image In Life“  brings together leading European research groups in imaging, biology, medicine and applied mathematics. The consortium contains the universities and research institutes as well as the private companies with the aim to perform the forefront research and commercialise developed tools. The 14 PhD students will be recruited and participate in the „Image In Life“ research and training programme.

The 2 open positions at STUBA are devoted to development of novel efficient numerical algorithms for segmentation and tracking of cells in 3D+time images and will be supervised by Prof. Karol Mikula from Department of Mathematics and Descriptive Geometry, Faculty of Civil Engineering at STUBA. The PhD position open in Tatramed Software s.r.o. is devoted to efficient implementation of biomedical image processing algorithms and will be supervised by Dr. Jozef Urbán. The close cooperation with leading biology groups in Europe in the "Image In Life" project framework will guarantee the cutting-edge 3D+time microscopic data and the forefront PhD research. The corresponding income, by the rules of Marie Sklodowska-Curie ITN programme, is offered to PhD students.
