invites applications for postdoctoral positions to work on the following research projects:
1. Development of novel 4D image processing methods for biomedical applications (Prof. RNDr. Karol Mikula, DrSc., Faculty of Civil Engineering STU, karol.mikula@stuba.sk)
The aim of the postdoctoral research project is a design, mathematical analysis and efficient parallel implementation of novel computational methods for 4D image processing in biology and medicine with applications in prevention of genetic and cancer diseases. The main goal is a design of efficient and reliable methods for cell tracking and related tasks of filtering, automatic cell detection and segmentation in 4D biomedical images. The filtering, detection, segmentation and tracking of cells will be based on numerical solution of nonlinear partial differential equations and computer implementations will be created by using parallel programming techniques based on MPI, OpenMP and GPU strategies.
2. Implementation of hybrid organic-inorganic structures to systems applicable in the the diagnosis and prevention within healthcare and in the monitoring of environmental quality - SMART SOCIETY (Prof. Ing. Daniel Donoval, DrSc., Faculty of Electrical Enginnering and Information Technology STU, daniel.donoval@stuba.sk)
The proposed theme deals with the problems in the field of therapy and prevention of life-threatening diseases, and also with the problems of design, construction, and diagnostics of the novel materials. During the work at the proposed theme is planned research of hybrid organic-inorganic structures with applications in systems useful in health care, in order to improving the quality of life - SMART SOCIETY. In the first step the design and preparation of the sensor platform will be performed and it will be as a basis for design of the sensing components. The system solution for wireless biomonitoring for improving health care will be formed on the basis of actual experiences obtained from solved projects engaged in therapy and prevention of life-threatening diseases. Sensor platform will be based on organic-inorganic material system, which will combine the benefits of organic and inorganic materials for achieving the possibility of creating a unique sensor element integrated in the sensor system. Successful preparation management of a comprehensive technology platform implemented on a basis of the combination of organic and inorganic materials is a step towards the future use of the advantages of the combination of organic and inorganic materials as a basis for the preparation of advanced electronic systems. The experiences obtained in the field of hybrid organic-inorganic structures preparation will used as a basis for the design and preparation of devices that are currently technically at least very difficult to prepare.
3. Development of new anticancer drug candidates: Experimental and theoretical electronic structure of new coordination compounds (Assoc. Prof. Ing. Jozef Kožíšek, CSc., Faculty of Chemical and Food Technology STU, jozef.kozisek@stuba.sk)
Experimental and theoretical electronic structure of Ru-complexes with indazole derivative ligands such as the most prominent ruthenium (III) compound H2ind[trans-RuIIICl4(Hind)2] (KP1019, Hind = indazole), or its sodium salt formulation KP1339 (which are now in clinical trials as anticancer agents against primary tumours and metastases) will be studied. Synthesis and electronic structure of promising coordination compounds will be investigated. Experimental diffraction data will be obtained from the newest laboratory source (STOE Stadi Vary), the synchrotron (Argon National Laboratory, DESY, SPRING8) and the neutron (ILL) facilities. For multipolar refinement and AIM analysis the XD software will be used. The results will be compared with quantum-chemical calculations.
4. Graphene-diamond interface: Atomic and electronic properties (Assoc. Prof. Ing. Viera Skákalová, CSc., University Technology Park STU, viera.skakalova@stuba.sk)
The electronic properties of diamond and graphene differ in two extremities. While the diamond electronic structure with the energy bandgap of about 6 eV leads to the electrical resistivity as high as 1018 Ohm.m, graphene shows a zero bandgap at Fermi level and its electrons can move with a relativistic velocity of 3 000 km/s .
The aim of this research project will be to bring the two extremities into tight vicinity. We propose to synthesize graphene-on-diamond (G-on-D) systems and to investigate the electronic and atomic structure of their interface. On top of it we will fabricate electronic devices based on G-on-D architecture.
5. Use of advanced predictive control strategies in energy savings, in the diagnostics, prevention and enhancing the safety of technological processes - solutions for embedded systems (Prof. Ing. Boris Rohaľ-Ilkiv, CSc., Faculty of Mechanical Engineering STU, boris.rohal-ilkiv@stuba.sk)
The topic of the theme is research and development of advanced embedded predictive control strategies with focus on energy savings, diagnostics, prevention and increasing safety of technological processes and technical systems. The aim is to develop new solutions for these applications, suitable for deployment on embedded hardware platforms, characterized by advanced intelligence and new progressive control functions capable of respecting all the specified technological, operational, safety, biological and other limitations imposed on the controlled system. The mathematical basis is to design an approach to solve (possibly non-linear) optimization problem with given (non-convex) optimality criterion, selected constraints and with the involved mathematical description of the controlled process or system. The optimality criteria and constraints will be formulated according to the particular application.
